“Outgoing Fog” pastel painting by Jan Roberson © 2015 using mats and frames from Stu-Art Supplies.

Outgoing Fog, this week’s WOW is an amazing pastel painting by artist Jan Roberson. In this particular case we feel that Jan’s description sums it up best:

Outgoing Fog is based on my neighbor’s boat which is moored right in front of my house. Some Maine mornings are wrapped in a mystique of fog, but his boat, a Rhodes 19, is close enough to shore that I usually can see it. On this particular morning the sun was burning a hole through the top layer and shining on the other side of the cove before it got to us. It is so beautiful with the various colors in the fog – the grays, blues, lavenders, and pinks. Then the light of the sun starts catching the rainbow colors in the fog droplets. Add to that the shimmering light on the water and the wavy reflection of the mast, it is a quiet picture, but one that moves. It is one of my favorite paintings.Jan Roberson

That’s an awesome description for a beautiful painting, isn’t it? That’s today’s WOW!

After reading Jan Robinson’s words it’s impossible to avoid looking back at her painting and not hear waves lapping against the boat. Can you feel the breeze and find yourself transported to that place on the lake?

Jan Roberson is a pastelist and lives in Quahog Bay in Harpswell. She grew up sailing in southern Maine and that’s reflected in her work where all kind of boats are featured under sail and at mooring. Also apparent in her work is her love for the beauty of the ever-changing woods that surround her.

Jan graduated with a BA and a MA Ed in education, taught school for 30 years, then returned to school and earned her BFA in painting from University of Southern Maine. She studied in St. Petersburg, Russia with internationally acclaimed pastelist Sergei Oussik. In this country she has had classes with nationally recognized artists Robert Carsten, Lorenzo Chavez, Richard McKinley and Sean Dye.

Jan does her own matting and framing, most in simple silver, black or gold frames. She uses plexiglass since travel to shows often results in regular glass breaking. Her philosophy on framing is that most people wish to frame to suit their own home.

Over the last few years Jan Roberson has made trips to England, Italy, France, Germany, Turkey and Spain to tour the world’s great collections of masterpieces.

By studying the styles and techniques of the great painters she has come to a fuller appreciation of the many ways to achieve certain effects.

Several of Jan’s paintings have been juried into national pastel shows. She has won awards for her work, including a first place prizes at Topsham Library’s Joy of Art and also at Skillins, a third from Pastel Painters of Maine, another cash prize in the juried Pastel Society of New Hampshire exhibit, and various ribbons from Saco Bay Artists.

Jan uses many different products from Stu-Art Supplies. She usually orders from our economy series of mats #207 Scrimshaw in a variety of sizes. Some of the frames used include #97 Florentine Silver & #15 Frosted Silver. Jan prefers to use acrylic glazing to reduce breakage while traveling between shows.
