This WOW!!! is about fascination, inspiration and the powerful beauty of horses. Today’s photo-based painting (on the right) “Monumental” by artist Adele Sypesteyn is an awesome example of how combining photography and textures with aged patinas and writings give us a completely new visual experience. Adele tells us about her mixed-media paintings and her passion about horses:

“I have been fascinated with horses for most of my life. The first time I went on a photo-shoot with a huge herd of these magical animals and stood close to them as they powered by me, I was totally in awe. I had to figure out a way to capture the physicality of these amazing creatures.

I challenged myself on how best to portray them so that you felt their presence in a major way. By capturing either a herd running toward you or looking into a close-up of their eye, I felt that they were right there in the room with me. Presenting them in black and white made a stunning statement and gave an elegance to their presence.

In order to make them a one-of-a-kind, photo-based, mixed-media painting I then added layers of texture and paint on top of the photograph. I had to be very careful in that I did not want to detract from the essence of their beauty.”
